Twenty-seven people were injured when a tram plunged off its track at the end of the line in a Rome residential area and another tram car derailed last night.

Police said the tram failed to slow as it came to the end of the line during the Monteverde district evening rush-hour. It went through a barrier and plunged 10 metres from the tracks, which run over a flyover at that point.

No passengers were in that car but 27 people in another car which derailed were injured - several of them seriously.

Many of the injured, who were brought to San Camillo hospital a few stops away, had fractures.
