Labour councillor Eric Byrne has said that Dublin City Council should consider twinning the city with Beirut.
Speaking in Kimmage, Cllr Byrne said that the act would be a public demonstration of solidarity. He suggested that it should be discussed by the council when it reconvenes in September.
"Ordinary civilians are paying the price for a fight between Israel and Hizbullah. Once again civilians are falling victim to a conflict over which they have no control," he said.
"I believe that most Dubliners are as appalled as I am at the nightly scenes of carnage on our TV screens. By twinning Dublin with Beirut we can demonstrate solidarity with the citizens of that unfortunate city."
