The main European Commission headquarters in Brussels was evacuated today in a security
alert as police examined an abandoned suitcase in an adjoining street.

Police used loudspeakers to urge office workers and residents to leave the area close to the European Union executive's Breydel office building in the Belgian capital's European district.

There has been a spate of security alerts across Europe since suspected Islamic militants exploded bombs on commuter trains in Madrid on March 11th, killing 190 people and wounding around 1,900.
