The investigation into National Irish Bank (NIB) over the improper charging of fees to its customers may lead to a windfall for the Community Foundation of Ireland (CFI).

NIB has set aside a sum of €10.6 million for an "Interest and Fee Reimbursement Programme" to repay its customers.

In a statement released this morning the bank said "if any of the €10.6 million set aside for this programme remains once all customer reimbursements are complete, it will be donated to our chosen charity, The Community Foundation for Ireland."

Ms Tina Roche, CFI Chief Executive, welcomed the possible donation saying:  "The CFI works in partnership with individuals, business and organisations to reach out to many of the most deprived and underprivileged members of our society, giving them hope, dignity, confidence and the prospect of a better life."

"We will ensure that this donation from National Irish Bank is used to support a variety of necessary projects across the country," Ms Roche added.
