A MAN was arrested after a fire on the 16th floor of a block of flats in north Belfast early yesterday. Fire rescue teams with assistance from the PSNI rescued six people in danger of being trapped.
The arrested man was in hospital last night for injuries believed to have been sustained during the fire. His injuries are understood not to be life-threatening.
The fire is believed to have started at around 3.30am in the livingroom of one of the 16th floor apartments at Grainne House in New Lodge. A number of floors were evacuated while fire teams rescued people on the floor who were trapped by smoke.
A spokesman for the fire service said the situation was very dangerous but that fire officers succeeded in putting out the fire and bringing residents to safety. The Northern Ireland Housing Executive, which runs the flats, was yesterday arranging alternative accommodation for those affected.
