NEW DELHI - India announced yesterday it was considering a vast array of proposals to commemorate 50 years of freedom from colonial rule, including a plan to erect a statue of Mahatma Gandhi - in Antarctica.
The Human Resource Development Minister, Mr S.R. Bommai, confirmed the proposal. He was responding to a questioner asking why the government had chosen Antarctica when there was not a single prominent statue of the spiritual father of independent India in New Delhi.
