The Garda Representative Association has asked all members of the force, their families and members of the public to "refrain from supporting" three national newspapers for their coverage of the recent deaths of a Garda sergeant and her newborn son.
The letter, which has been sent to every Garda station in the State, also criticised the naming of a garda in a recent traffic accident in Lucan in which a 24- year-old man died.
At a meeting of the GRA's national executive committee in Dublin on Tuesday, it was agreed to send a directive to all Garda stations in the country requesting that all members of An Garda Síochána, their families and the general public to refrain from supporting the Sunday Independent, the Mail on Sundayand the Irish Independent.
In a statement, the deputy general secretary of the GRA, John Healy, said the association's central executive committee had "unanimously agreed to ask members of the force and their families as well as the general public to demonstrate their outrage at the insensitive and deplorable coverage" of the deaths of Ms Corcoran and her son, Zach.
Ms Corcoran (34) died last Friday in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda while giving birth to twin boys.
The statement said the executive also "expressed its disdain for the manner in which the recent traffic accident in Lucan, Co Dublin, was reported" and said the newspapers' naming of a garda was "singled out for particular criticism".
The statement said the GRA "respectfully requests that all members of An Garda Síochána and members of the public refrain from supporting" the Sunday Independent, the Mail on Sundayand the Irish Independent.
Earlier this week, the GRA and the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors condemned the coverage of the deaths of Ms Corcoran and her baby in the Sunday Independent, the Evening Heraldand the Irish Daily Star.
