Turn off the TV snacks

Snacking in front of the TV can be a disaster for healthy eating. Mindless munching of fatty, salty or sugary snacks (not to mention the wine or beer) is a fast-track to piling on excess weight, and if it happens late at night then you could be sleeping on an unsettled stomach too.

You could go cold turkey and stop eating in front of the telly altogether. Or, if the urge to graze is too strong on occasion, opt for healthier snacks like crudités of raw carrots, celery and pepper.

If you do find yourself staring at the TV with food to hand, perhaps choose your programme wisely. A recent study from Cornell University found that people who snacked watching distracting, action-packed shows ate more than people who were watching a talk show while the snacks were on offer.
