MIAMI - A group of shackled prisoners shuffled from an Everglades detention centre on the first stage of their journeys home yesterday, a day after the US Attorney General, Ms Janet Reno, announced an election year campaign to curb illegal immigration in Florida. The deportation involves 30 illegal immigrants serving time for offences ranging from drug trafficking to burglary. Nine are from Colombia, five from Haiti and the rest from El Salvador, Guyana, Mexico, the Bahamas, Germany, the Dominican Republic, Britain, Jamaica and the Netherlands.
