Man charged with attempted murder, rape
A man tried to drown his partner by repeatedly submerging her in a bath of water, the High Court in Belfast heard yesterday.
The allegation was made by a prosecution lawyer during the man's bail application. He is charged with attempting to murder his partner and also raping her in their home in Ballymena last month.
The man, a Polish national, told police he had punched his partner but denied putting her in the bath or raping her.
Defence counsel John Hunter said the woman had withdrawn her allegations against him, but crown counsel Kate McKay said police had told her the prosecution could proceed despite the withdrawal.
Man on stab charge further remanded
An Ennis man charged in connection with stabbing a waitress at an Ennis hotel last Tuesday night has been further remanded in custody to January 19th.
Tommy Dormer (32), Gort Road, Ennis, appeared at Ennis District Court yesterday on charges of assaulting Mia Buena (29) at the Auburn Lodge hotel.
Judge Joseph Mangan circulated a letter from the governor of Limerick prison to Insp Michael Gallagher and Mr Dormer's solicitor William Cahir which said a psychiatric report would take 14 to 21 days to complete.
Mr Cahir asked that Mr Dormer receive care from a psychiatrist in prison.
Ordnance Survey Ireland
An article in yesterday's edition of The Irish Times, headed 'Where are all the Irish Speakers?', alleged that employees of the Ordnance Survey Office had been extremely unhelpful and unpleasant to Manchán Magan when he attended at the office and attempted to deal with them in Irish and had used a "cold, threatening tone" towards him.

Girl (15) missing from Palmerstown
Gardaí are seeking help in tracing the whereabouts of a teenage girl from Dublin who has been missing since the end of December.
Aoife Gunnery (15), from Palmerstown in west Dublin, was last seen on Dorset Street in the north inner city on December 30th.
She is described as 158cm tall (5ft 2in), slim, with blue eyes and black hair. She was wearing a pink tracksuit.

Exposing sentence adjourned
A district court judge has adjourned the sentencing of a man who exposed himself to girls outside a school, pending the completion of a psychiatrist's report.
At Ennis District Court yesterday, Hamilton Abrenhosa (29), Cregaun, Tobartaoscáin, Ennis, appeared in connection with pleading guilty to four counts of indecent exposure in November.
Judge Joseph Mangan further remanded him in custody to reappear at Ennis District Court on January 19th.
Youth (17) faces car crime charges
A youth who allegedly jumped out of a moving car which then collided with a Garda vehicle has been remanded on bail by the Dublin Children's Court.
The youth (17) from the south inner city is facing more than 20 charges relating to car crime offences in June, August and October last year.
The youth, who was supported in court by his father, is alleged to have been involved in a litany of car break-ins in which vehicles were damaged and thousands of euro worth of property stolen from them.
Judge David Anderson remanded him on bail to allow him to get legal advice.
