An elderly Australian tourist who went missing in Ireland was located “safe and well” this morning, a Garda spokesman said.

William Tyquin (85) travelled to Ireland ten days ago to travel around the island and had hired a black Hyundi car.

However his family became concerned for him when he had not been seen since Tuesday last in Athlone, Co Westmeath.

Gardaí issued an appeal yesterday urging the public to be on the look out for the 1.67m (5ft 6in) tall Australian tourist with grey hair, who had been wearing cream coloured trousers, a grey t-shirt and sandals when last seen.

Gardaí thanked the public for its assistance in the matter.
