Gardaí in Cork have begun investigating a second fatal road traffic collision following the death of a 51-year-old man while driving on the north side of the city on Monday night.
The man, who is from Mayfield on Cork's northside, was driving down Glen Avenue near Blackpool at 7.50pm when the car went out of control and crashed through a railing and hit a parked car.
The emergency services were alerted and the man was brought by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival and a post-mortem is due to take place on Tuesday.
The fatality is the second on Cork roads in less than 12 hours and follows the death of an 80-year-old man in another road traffic collision in East Cork around 2.30pm on Monday.
The pensioner was driving through Knockraha near Glanmire when his car crashed into a ditch and overturned and the man was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
The man, who is from the Knockraha area, was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will take place on Tuesday to establish the cause of death.
The two deaths in Cork bring the number of people who have lost their lives on Cork road’s so far this year to five and follows two other road fatalities in the county earlier this month.
