The recently retired secretary of the Department of Agriculture, Tom Moran, has received an award from the French ministry for agriculture for exceptional services to agriculture.

Mr Moran, who served as secretary general for 10 years, was named officer in the Ordre du Mérite Agricole, an award established in 1883.

Mr Moran received the accolade for promoting a positive relationship between France and Ireland in the agriculture and agrifood sector. He has also been asked to chair the newly-established Irish Association of the Ordre du Mérite Agricole.
