Gardaí in Carlow are appealing for witnesses to a serious crash on Friday night on the southbound carriage of the M9 motorway between junction 4 (Castledermot, Co. Kildare) and junction 5 (Tinryland, Co. Carlow).

The incident happened at about 7.30pm.

A male truck driver in his early 40s got out of his cab onto the hard shoulder of the motorway and was struck by a passing car. The truck driver was airlifted to Tallaght Hospital and is in a serious but stable condition.

The male driver and his female passenger, both in their mid 30s, of the car were uninjured.

The road was closed to facilitate a technical examination and has now reopened.
