An Irishman is in a critical condition in a hospital in Melbourne, Australia after being found with head injuries on Saturday night.

Eoin Murray (30) was found injured in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy early on Saturday morning. He is originally from Leixlip, Co Kildare.

Victoria Police believe he got out of a taxi between 5.30am and 5.50am. He was discovered by a passerby on Nicholson Street at about 6am and was taken to hospital with head injuries.Mr Murray is in a serious condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Police say Mr Murray was leaning on a car after a night out with friends when he got into an argument with another man.

It is not yet known whether Mr Murray fell or was pushed before hitting his head on a gutter and suffering life-threatening injuries.

Though the police interviewed the man who argued with Mr Murray, no charges have been laid.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to the man’s family.
