Gardaí have arrested a man for questioning in connection with the shooting of a man in a North Cork pub over the bank holiday weekend.

Officers from Mallow arrested the 30-year-old man in the Banteer area shortly before 8am this morning and brought him to Mallow Garda Station for questioning about the gun attack.

The attack happened when a lone gunman armed with an air rifle walked into the White Country Inn in Banteer at around 8pm on Sunday and singled out a a 35-year-old man.

The intended target was hit in the neck as he tried to flee.

He was not seriously injured and declined an offer of an ambulance to take him to hospital but instead caught a taxi home.

The bar was crowded at the time and gardaí began taking statements from customers who witnessed the shooting in a bid to try and identify the gunman who wasn’t masked.

Gardaí later recovered a firearm near the scene and the weapon has since been sent to Dublin for forensic analysis by garda ballistics experts.

The man arrested today is being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act which allows gardai hold suspects for up to 72 hours.
