Man dies while operating stone crusher in Mayo quarry

A man died on Thursday morning after an incident in a quarry near Tooreen, Co Mayo.

The victim, who was in his 20s, died at about 10am while operating a stone crusher.

Ambulance personnel and a local doctor were quickly on the scene when the alarm was raised. The victim was removed from the crusher but there was nothing that could be done to save him.

The quarry where the young man was working is one of a number operated by Frank Harrington Limited.

Gardaí attended the scene and the quarry was closed. Health and safety personnel attended to conduct an investigation.

The remains were removed to Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar for postmortem.
