The owner of the shop which sold last night’s €6m lotting winning ticket has said he hopes the new millionaire is a local person and someone who needs the cash.

The ticket was sold at Argue's Londis Service Station, Cootehill in Co Cavan.

Owner Jim Argue said he received a call from David Woods, local lotto representative at around 11.30pm to say they had sold the only winning ticket.

It’s the first time the shop has sold such a major winner.

“You know when the local lotto rep calls you at 11.30pm to say you’ve sold the winning ticket that he’s not pulling your leg,” said Mr Argue.

“I was just delighted and especially delighted for the person who has won such a great sum of money. It will change their lives and the very best of luck to them.”

Jim said his shop has been buzzing with excitement all morning but he does not know who bought the ticket.

“We’re on the outskirts of the town and we get a lot of passing trade so I suppose it could be anyone,” he said.

“The rumour mill has already gone into overdrive but nobody really knows apart from the person themselves who has won it.”

“I would like it to my someone local and hopefully someone who needs the cash. We’re all delighted for whoever it is.”

The shop has been opened for more than 20 years and Jim has worked there for the past 13 years or so.

Last night’s winning numbers for the €6,409,326 Jackpot were 7, 16, 18, 20, 24, 37 and the bonus number was 13.
