Gardaí in Cork have begun an investigation after a young man had part of his ear bitten off during an assault in the city centre in the early hours of this morning.
The student (22), from Mid-Cork, was injured after a row broke out in a fast food restaurant in South Main Street at about 2.45am and spilled out on to the street.
The student and another man became embroiled in a struggle and fell to the ground and while on the ground, the student had part of his ear bitten off.
The emergency services alerted and the man was waiting for an ambulance when gardaí arrived on the scene and discovered him in a highly distressed state.
Gardaí rushed the man to Cork University Hospital where it’s understood surgeons were working to try and re-attach the severed part of his ear.
The scene has been cordoned off and a Garda Technical Team is due to begin a forensic examination of the scene of the assault shortly.
CCTV footage from a number of premises in the area is being examined in a bid to try and identify the other party in the row.
However, it’s understood that gardai are following a definite line of inquiry and have any asked witnesses to contact them at the Bridewell Garda station on (021) 4943330.
