Teenager dies in Tipperary after stolen car hits wall

The black BMW had been reported missing from a car sales yard at Brosna in Birr between 1am and 1.40am this morning.

An 18-year-old teenager was killed and his friend seriously injured when the car they were driving crashed into a wall.

Tributes were left yesterday on the Facebook page of Steven Carney from Kennedy Park, Roscrea, Co Tipperary who would have been 19 in a fortnight.

Local councillor John Hogan said Mr Carney had come from a "lovely family in the town. Young Stephen was heavily involved in the local youth club in Roscrea in his youth. I'm very sorry for the family'."

The accident occured at 1.55am yesterday morning on the Birr Road about a kilometre outside the town.

Shortly after the crash, a doctor arrived on the scene and Mr Carney's body was removed to Limerick Regional Hospital where a post mortem will be held at a later stage.

The 16-year-old male passenger was seriously injured and taken to the same hospital. He remains in a serious condition.

The scene was preserved to facilitate garda forensic investigators and road diversions were in place yesterday.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to contact them at Roscrea Garda Station on 0505 24230.

In a separate incident, Gardaí have arrested the driver of a car in which a 63-year-old woman died on Saturday evening.

The car struck a wall at Harvey Place, New Ross, County Wexford, at 7pm.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her body was taken to Wexford General Hospital where a post mortem is to be arranged.

The driver, aged 59, was brought to Wexford General Hospital with non-serious injuries.

He was released from garda custody without charge yesterday and the investigation is continuing.
