Australian-based Irish jockey Damien Murphy has died from injuries received after falling from his horse in a race on Friday at Wellington in New South Wales.
Murphy (23), who hailed from Co Kildare, died just after 9 o'clock Irish time this morning in hospital in Sydney. His mother and sister were by his side.
The jockey never regained consciousness after he fell from his ride, Ajay's Luck at Wellington race track.
It is believed that Murphy incurred serious head injuries and may have also suffered a heart attack after his mount clipped heels with another runner during the race.
