Israeli troops killed five Palestinians in Gaza today hours before Prime Minister Ariel Sharon sought cabinet approval for the evacuation of most settlements in the area.
In the raid on Abassan, Israeli troops clashed with gunmen and killed three alleged militants and two bystanders, witnesses and medics said. Ten other Palestinians were hurt.
Among the dead were Hamas leader Salem Qudeh and his wife.
The Islamic group said the couple blew themselves up in a suicide attack - the Israeli army confirmed that Qudeh exploded after being fired at. His wife was beside him.
Meanwhile, In the West Bank village of Kharbatha al-Misbah, police fired rubber-coated metal bullets and teargas at protesting Palestinians. At least 26 Palestinians and an Israeli activist were hurt.
Mr Sharon's move to evacuate settlements in contrary to the internationally-backed "road map" for peace and has raised suspicion among both Israelis and Palestinians.
He faces strong opposition within his own party despite widespread public support for his plan.
