Tel Aviv - A woman friend of Yitzhak Rabin's assassin was yesterday sentenced to nine months in jail for failing to prevent the killing of the Israeli prime minister three years ago.

Margalit Har-Shefi (23), a Jewish settler who attended law school with the assassin, Yigal Amir, stared at the floor in silence as the sentence - falling short of the maximum two-year term demanded by the prosecution - was read in court. Afterwards she publicly expressed remorse for the first time over the death of Rabin, who was murdered at a Tel Aviv peace rally in November 1995.
