Lille - Four French students who stole ornamental gnomes from gardens in northeast France over several months met a judge yesterday who did not appreciate the joke.

Magistrate Bernard Lemaire sentenced the unnamed ringleader of the Garden Gnomes Liberation Front to two months' jail - suspended - and a 3,000 French franc (£333) fine. Two other students drew one-month suspended terms and the fourth lost his driving licences for four months.
