Surfers from around the world visit Co Clare each year to tackle huge waves known as Aileens, below the Cliffs of Moher.
Al Mennie, from Donegal, was photographed surfing this wave at 11.30 last Sunday morning. The name for one of the biggest waves in Europe comes from the Aill na Searrach headland above, which means "leap of the foals".
Mennie was towed into the wave by a jetski, which was used to slingshot him down the face of the wave.
The white cap he surfed is thought to have been about 30 feet (9.1m) high, but Aileens can reach more than twice that height when at their biggest between November and February.
Mennie tries to surf Aileens as often as he can, and this was the second of 10 waves he managed to surf during the day without coming off his board.
