A young man who stole a laptop and wallet from a parked van in front of two off-duty gardaí has been given a three-year prison term with one year suspended.

Judge Frank O’Donnell noted that the accused had been involved in seven incidents since this offence last year and had “a continuous disregard for any stricture put on him”.

Leonard Dumbrell (21), Emmet Road, Inchicore, Dublin, smashed the Ford Transit’s window a few steps away from gardaí and ran off with a laptop and wallet. He pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Garda David Hanlon said his colleagues heard glass break behind them and turned to see Dumbrell lean in the smashed window and steal a black bag.
