The wife of a murdered bouncer was in Limerick District Court yesterday when a man was charged with her husband's killing over 2½ years after his death.

Alice Fitzgerald's husband was shot dead outside his home in November 2002.

James Martin Cahill (30), with an address in Birmingham, is charged with the murder of Brian Fitzgerald at Brookhaven Walk, Mill Road, Corbally on November 29th 2002. The father-of-two was returning from work at Doc's nightclub where he worked as head of security when he was shot.

Yesterday in court, Det Sgt Séamus Nolan, gave evidence of arresting and charging Mr Cahill at Henry Street Garda station.

The court heard that he said: "I understand it," in response to the charge. Mr Cahill remained silent throughout the brief court hearing.

Judge Tom O'Donnell told his solicitor, Leo Morrisson, that bail would be a matter for the High Court and he remanded the accused in custody until June 23rd when he is to appear again before the court.

There was a strong Garda presence inside the courtroom yesterday and armed detectives patrolled the area outside.

Mr Cahill is the first person to be charged in connection with the murder.
