DEPARTMENT of Agriculture officials are to meet representatives of the pig processing industry within days to discuss how the industry plans to deal with the problem of antibiotic residues in pork.

Following a warning by the Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ivan Yates, that he would act if the industry did not, a Department spokes man said he hoped to hear the industry's proposals before the end of the week.

The Minister's comments followed the publication of an EU report which found the levels of antibiotics in Irish pork to be the highest in Europe.
