The mother of the Romanian man whose body was found in a suitcase in Dublin's Royal Canal last month has appealed to his friends for information about his whereabouts in the days before his death.

At a press conference this morning in Dublin, Ms Marianna Moraru thanked the Irish people for their financial contributions made towards the cost of the removal and funeral arrangements for her son, Mr Adrian Bestea (21).

The donations, she said, will help bring the body back home which is a very important religious concern for the family.

She said she was sure with the help of the Irish people, the gardaí would catch those responsible for the murder.

Chief Supt Al McHugh, who is in charge of the investigation, said intensive investigations into the murder were ongoing and they had interviewed over 2,000 people.

Supt McHugh appealed for Mr Bestea's Russian girlfriend to come forward with any evidence she may have which would help the inquiry.

He described her as a native of Russia known as Marianna, 26 years of age and of medium build with long blond hair. She had worked around Dublin over the past two years and the gardaí are appealing for either her, or anyone with any information on where she is, to come forward.

Supt McHugh said, there is nothing to suggest she is in any trouble herself. The Garda press office will release a photofit of Mr Bestea's girlfriend later today.

Ms Moraru also appealed to any asylum-seeker who had information but was in an irregular situation over residency papers to come forward without fear as, she said, the gardaí's behaviour towards her and anyone questioned during the course of the inquiry, had been impeccable and she had full confidence in their investigations.

The Garda forensic team is examining a small amount of blood, which may be related to the death, found in a flat at a house on Strand Road, Sandymount. Gardaí have yet to confirm the house was the murder scene.

Mr Bestea's body was found on July 20th but was only identified weeks later after the Garda took the unusual step of releasing a photograph of his body. He died of head injuries inflicted by a blunt instrument.
