MOTHER Teresa visited Armagh last night, where she spoke of the importance of the family.

She was repeatedly applauded as she spoke in a packed St Patrick's Cathedral at the end of a holy hour of prayer during which she led the 1,400 strong congregation in a firm voice in the recitation, of the Rosary and hymn singing.

Mother Teresa (85), who was in the city for the official opening of a community house for her Sisters of Charity order, was confined to a wheelchair, having sprained her ankle shortly after arriving at Dublin Airport on Thursday night.

She was wheeled into the cathedral and helped into a front pew where she sat with three members of her order.

Despite her injury, she struggled to her feet and, with the support of two sisters, moved to the sacristy steps for the concluding hymn.

She told the congregation "A family that prays together stays together.

"A family that stays together loves each other. Real loving and understanding give peace and joy."

Earlier, at the residence of Cardinal Cahal Daly, she met a group of the city's churchmen including the Church of Ireland Dean, the Very Rev Herbert Cassidy.
