US:A New York man who killed two police officers has been sentenced to death after a jury watched an RTÉ documentary on the life of one the victims.

The jury sentenced Ronell Wilson (24) to death after watching a 20-minute interview recorded for an RTÉ documentary entitled NYPD Green in which Det James Nemorin spoke about his fear of dying on the job and his love for his family.

Mr Wilson is the first person to be sentenced to death in New York in over 40 years and this is the first time a New York federal jury has returned a death sentence in over 50 years.

Wilson murdered Det Nemorin and his partner, Rodney Andrews, while they were carrying out an investigation into illegally held arms in Staten Island in 2003.

Prosecutors played the jury the RTÉ footage to persuade the jury of the seriousness of the murder.

NYPD Green was recorded by the Dublin production company Graph Films, as part of a series on the lives of Irish Americans in the New York police department.

Wilson was convicted of the double murder in December.
