A Nigerian judge rejected today a government attempt to stop unions staging a general strike from January 21st over rising fuel prices.

"I have not been referred to any law that justifies the banning of workers from engaging in strikes or mass protests," said Mr Lawal Gumi, chief judge of the Federal Capital Territory.

"Because of these shortcomings, I declare that the application fails and is hereby dismissed."
