Seoul - A retired North Korean lieutenant colonel defected to South Korea yesterday and asked for political asylum, the National Security Service said.

Lieut-Col Shim Shin-Bok (48), who arrived in Seoul through an unidentified third country, said he had served as a communist political commissar at the Pyongyang anti-aircraft gun command before he retired in June 1996, it said.
