North's teachers to be given 6,000 computers

Thousands of laptop computers will be provided to teachers in the North as part of a £13

Thousands of laptop computers will be provided to teachers in the North as part of a £13.2 million investment by the Northern Ireland Executive.

Announcing the package yesterday, the Minister for Education, Mr Martin McGuinness, said 6,000 laptops and 1,000 digital projectors would be provided.

"I am greatly encouraged by the fact that well over one-third of our teachers have already signed up to the teachers' education programme in Information Computer Technology."

It was an indication of the commitment of teachers to develop their skills, which could in turn be passed on to children, he said.

Some 5,800 laptops have been made available to teachers in the last two years. The additional 6,000, due to be delivered in the coming weeks, will provide one laptop for every two of the North's 21,000 teachers.

Mr McGuinness said all schools in the North are already on-line as part of the Network for Education initiative. One networked computer is available for every five pupils in special schools, for every 11 pupils in primary schools and every eight pupils in secondary schools.
