A new mayor was elected for the town of Naas, Co Kildare, to replace Fine Gael’s Cllr Darren Scully, who resigned last month over his remarks on radio stating he would not represent “Black Africans” in his constituency.
He subsequently apologised unreservedly for his comments. Still a sitting councillor for Naas, Mr Scully did not attend yesterday’s meeting.
The new mayor is Fianna Fáil’s Mr Willie O’Callaghan. Cllr O’Callaghan said he was delighted to be given the honour and was looking forward to the 2012 term.
