The team set up to counsel people in the wake of the Omagh bombing is expected to complete most of its work by the end of this month.

Since its formation in the wake of the August 1998 explosion, which killed 29 and injured hundreds more, the Community Trauma and Recovery Team has dealt with around 600 people. However, following a steady reduction in the numbers seeking support, Sperrin Lakeland Trust has now decided to launch a round of consultations to complete the team's work.

Mr Hugh Mills, the trust's chief executive, said it was now felt the team's role has been largely accomplished. The decision to wind it up was a measure of the community's ability to cope with the tragedy.

"Since shortly after the inquests last September, the number of people seeking help has continued to drop and we believe the point has now been reached where our mainstream services can provide support.
