A man has been arrested in Co Down after two officers were hurt, one seriously, when a driver ran a checkpoint near Newcastle.

The two officers sustained injuries when they were dragged along by a car with four occupants after it initially stopped at the checkpoint. The driver got out of the car but he suddenly jumped back and took off at high speed dragging both officers with it.

One officer was thrown from the car and received injuries which were treated in hospital before he was discharged. But a second officer is still in hospital after he sustained multiple injuries, including a serious one to the head when he was dragged form a round 200 yards. His condition is described as serious.

The incident happened at around 1 a.m. on the Shimna Road.

Initial attempts to halt the car using a stinger failed but a high speed chase ensued and a second patrol, using a stinger, brought the car to a halt in the village of Drumaness, a few miles from the first incident.

A 21-year-old man arrested but by this time the other occupants of the car had got out.
