A man in his 20s has become the first road death victim of the year.
The man was walking along Mail Coach Road in Sligo at around 3.45am when he was hit by a car.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was removed to Sligo General Hospital where he died this morning. The road was closed off and diversions are in place.
Meanwhile, gardaí have named the two people killed in car crashes in Meath and Westmeath over the weekend.
Paddy Daly (73) from Rosemount, Moate, died when the car he was driving hit a wall at Ballinderry yesterday morning.
The woman who died in hospital shortly after being knocked down by a car while crossing a road in Laytown, Co Meath on Saturday evening was also named this morning.
She was Ita O'Brien (80), of Eannafort Road, Raheny, Dublin.
A total of 367 people died on the State's roads last year, down from 396 in 2005.
