President Michael D Higgins’ communications chief Hans Zomer has left Áras an Uachtaráin to take a new post as chief executive at Global Action Plan Ireland, an environmental group.

Mr Zomer served nearly six years at the Áras and he described the experience as a “tremendous honour”. Mr Higgins thanked him for his work and dedication and wished him every success in his new post.

Andrew Payne, an official in the Department of Justice, will take over as interim head of communications at the Áras. He was a Government press officer from 2011 to 2016.

Prior to working for the President, Mr Zomer served as director of Dóchas, the umbrella group for overseas development organisations.
