Group to provide expert economic knowledge to politicians

Economist Colm McCarthy is among the members of the Banking Inquiry’s advisory group.

The group’s members are to provide expert knowledge to the politicians on the Banking Inquiry committee.

The nine members include specialists from the public and private sectors with knowledge and expertise in relation to the banking sector.

Also among the group’s members are the economist and commentator Megan Greene of Maverick Intelligence and the Comptroller and Auditor General Séamus McCarthy.

Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch TD confirmed the experts would work on a pro-bono basis.

“We are delighted to have the services of the ad-hoc support group of specialists and would like to thank them for agreeing to provide their knowledge and input to the Committee in developing our proposal,” he said.

Mr Lynch said group had its first meeting yesterday when members were briefed on the ongoing work of the committee and the legal and procedural framework for the inquiry.

There was also a preliminary discussion on the potential scope of the inquiry, he added.

The group will meet again this Friday, the following Friday (July 18th) and Tuesday July 22nd.
