An Independent Senator has started a campaign to have the Seanad recalled during the summer break for the third year in a row.

Gerard Craughwell wants the Upper House to be reconvened for a day to discuss the Eurostat ruling that Irish Water must remain on the Government books after it failed the market corporation test. He said he had pledges from 27 of the Seanad’s 60 members of the Seanad.

Last year Independent Senator David Norris won agreement to have the Seanad reconvened to debate the attack on Gaza by the Israeli Defence Forces.

In 2013, Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly gathered enough signatures to recall the Seanad to debate an EU Commission directive on organ donation. HARRY McGEE
