Power cut on overhead lines delays Luas trams

Services on Dublin's Luas line were disrupted for 40 minutes yesterday morning due to a power cut on the overhead lines.

Trams between Sandyford and St Stephen's Green were halted from about 6 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Rail Procurement Agency, who said the service quickly returned to normal and that a "couple of hundred" early-morning commuters were affected.

Although there were buses on hand, there was no need to implement the emergency plan, he said. An investigation into the power failure has been launched.

The spokesman confirmed there had been some difficulties with ticket-vending machines on the line, causing some passenger delays. In peak times passengers have had to join queues to buy tickets before boarding. Some machines are "a bit slow", he said, and people had not yet started buying weekly and monthly tickets, causing some queues and delays. "Software problems with the ticket machines will be ironed out," he said.

Extra customer service operators with hand-held machines will be introduced shortly to deal with the problem, he said.
