SOFIA - Thousands of protesters calling for early elections beat pans, blew whistles and stoned the headquarters of Bulgaria's ruling Socialist party yesterday. Carrying candles, they rattled drink cans filled with virtually worthless coins, in a bitter comment on the country's economic problems.

"In the name of Bulgaria, in the name of our future and our children, we demand early elections," Mr Ivan Kostov, leader of the main opposition Union of Democratic Forces, told the crowd.
