June 6th , 1981 - In the world's worst recorded rail disaster, at least 800 people are killed when seven rear coaches of an overcrowded passenger train are blown off the track during a cyclone in India.

January 13th, 1985 - In Ethiopia, several coaches plunge into a ravine after leaving the rails at a crossing, killing 392.

June 4th, 1989 - At least 575 people are killed in the Ural mountains in the Soviet Union when two passenger trains are engulfed in an explosion from a leaking gas pipeline.

January 3rd, 1990 - A packed passenger express crashes into a stationary freight train in southern Pakistan, killing 307.

September 22nd, 1994 - In Angola, up to 300 people are killed when a train derails just outside the city of Lubango.

August 20th, 1995 - At least 350 people are killed in India when two trains collide 200 km from Delhi.

October 28th, 1995 - About 300 people are killed when an underground railway train catches fire in the Azerbaijan capital Baku.

August 2nd, 1999 - At least 285 killed in India when two trains collide north of Calcutta.

February 18th, 2003 - 130 people are killed after fire and smoke engulfed a packed subway train in Taegu, South Korea. The fire was started by an arsonist.

February 18th, 2004 - Almost 300 people are killed when 51 train wagons filled with petrol, and sulphur products derail and explode near Nishapur, Iran.

April 22nd, 2004 - A train laden with explosives blows up at a station in North Korea near the centre of Ryongchon, 161 people are killed.
