A psychopathic rapist who escaped from a life sentence and raped again six months later was sentenced to life this afternoon at the Central Criminal Court.
Michael Murphy aka Michael Barrett (54) viciously assaulted and raped an English tourist in a Dublin hotel after been invited back to her room. He had been jailed indefinitely in 1994 in Manchester for raping a woman and stabbing her 33 times.
He was also convicted in a Manchester Court in 1975 for the manslaughter of his father and was given a 18 month suspended sentence.
Murphy, of no fixed abode, escaped from a secure psychiatric unit in November 2006 and traveled to Ireland. On March 20th, 2007 he met the victim and her friend in the Oliver St John Gogarty pub in Temple Bar and after drinking all day went back to their hotel room.
After some more wine, he was walked to the door by the woman. He punched her in the face and pushed her into the bathroom where he raped her. He also ordered her to give him oral sex, threatening to kill her unless she did it right.
The woman eventually escaped and ran naked down to reception. Gardai searched the hotel and discovered Murphy hiding in a linen closet.
Murphy, who suffers from a psychopathic disorder triggered by alcohol, had pleaded not guilty to rape, oral rape, sexual assault and threatening to kill the woman and her friend.
He was convicted by a jury last month on all counts except for threatening to kill the woman's friend on which they disagreed.
Mr Justice George Birmingham heard details of the offence this morning and finalised the sentence this afternoon.
