An Irish regency serving table dating from 1820 has sold at auction for €32,000, along with hundreds of other items from Limerick's Jesuit church.
Some 685 lots, which formed the contents of the Jesuit Church of the Sacred Heart, went under the hammer following the closure of the church this month.
A pair of marble angels were sold for €7,000, several thousand euro more than the guide price. An 18th century oil painting, The Dying Joseph, once owned by Lady Limerick, also generated significant interest when it fetched €9,200.
Most of the contents of the church and its adjoining residence - with the exception of sacred items - were sold at the auction in Sixmilebridge, Co Clare.
Certain items from the listed building will remain in place, including windows, altars, shrines and the organ.
Auctioneer John Dunphy said many of the buyers were congregations from small churches around the country who pooled resources to upgrade their local churches.
He declined to reveal the total amount raised by the sale, but it is understood to be around €250,000.
Some of the proceeds will go towards the establishment of a new Jesuit Centre for Spirituality due to open in Limerick this year.
