International Red Cross officials have visited Saddam Hussein at his secret prison, a US military spokesman has announced.

"Today a visit between Saddam Hussein and authorised members of the International Committee of the Red Cross occurred at an undisclosed location," Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told a news conference today.

It was the second visit by the Red Cross to Saddam.

The former Iraqi president, toppled a year ago by the US invasion and captured in December, will spend his first birthday in captivity on Wednesday when he turns 67.
