Ten patients at a Co Fermanagh hospital are suffering from MRSA.

A ward at the Erne Hospital in Enniskillen was closed to new admissions after the discovery of the Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcal Aureus "superbug".

The Western Trust said all precautions were being taken at the hospital and that it was not clear whether the elderly patients had caught the infection at the hospital or were carriers when admitted.

The affected patients have been isolated, and it is understood none of their conditions are giving cause for concern.

SDLP Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA Tommy Gallagher called for a new strategy for curtailing MRSA infection.
