The Office, the hit show created and fronted by comedian Ricky Gervais, has been a surprise double winner at the Golden Globe awards.

The BBC show was named best TV comedy series and Gervais also picked up the award for best actor in a comedy.

"I'm not from these parts. I'm from a little place called England. We used to run the world before you," a delighted Gervais quipped on receiving his award.

The Office, in which Gervais plays the hopelessly out-of-touch boss David Brent, had been nominated alongside Sex and the City, Will and Grace, Arrested Developmentand Monk.

The show has won awards in Britain, and an American version of the "mockumentary" is being made.
