JOINT Army Garda checkpoints are being set up along the Border today as security is tightened for the Sinn Fein Ardfheis which is being held for the first time tomorrow in Monaghan town. The conference is expected to attract around 800 delegates. The increased security follows an attempt made two months ago to bomb Sinn Fein offices in the town. Loyalists were believed to be behind the attack.
Last night a Sinn Fein ardcomhairle member, Mr Caoimhin O Caolain, who lives in Monaghan, said the hosting of the conference in the Border area was considered a boost to his campaign for a Dail seat in the next general election. He was selected at a party convention for the Cavan Monaghan constituency last month. Sinn Fein leader Mr Gerry Adams is to address the conference tomorrow evening.
